Title: Conservation Technician
Classification: Regular-Part Time
Location: Missaukee Conservation District
Job Overview This position is in the Missaukee Conservation District Office, Lake City. The Technician is responsible for creating watershed projects and managing 83 acres of donated land. The Technician provides technical leadership to the project and other office staff. The Technician also provides general support for the Missaukee Conservation District.
Primary Duties
1. Technical Assistance and Grant Administration
a. Create watershed projects in accordance with District Policies.
b. Work with landowners/producers to implement Best Management Practices.
c. Perform site visits.
d. Provide technical assistance to landowners on forestry, wildlife, water quality, native plants, and related
topics.
e. Prepare and submit required reports.
2. Information and Education
a. Assist in planning District workshops, Field Days, and fundraisers.
b. Coordinate District educational services with Education Coordinator and local schools, groups, and
organizations.
c. Assist in conducting annual tree and native plant sales as part of an educational program.
3. Public Relations
a. Represent the District in public appearances to inform the public, conservation partners, and local units of
government of District programs, services, and their role in the community.
b. Serve as a District contact and attend relevant meetings.
c. Coordinate and strengthen conservation partnerships within the community.
4. General/Partnership Responsibilities
a. Answer phone, take messages, assist customers.
5. Responsibilities to the District Manager/Board
a. Assist in organizing and conducting annual fundraising campaigns through the tree and native plant sales.
b. Prepare and submit required monthly reports.
c. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
a. Working towards and on track for a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Geology, Agronomy, or
related field or equivalent experience.
b. Experience managing project budgets, customer service, and reporting.
c. Demonstrated ability to collect field information and prepare reports based on results.
d. Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
e. Ability to organize meetings, events, and to deliver public presentations.
f. Ability to work cooperatively with individuals, groups, and organizations.
g. Self-motivated and self-directed.
h. Knowledge of natural resource management and conservation.
i. Proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, and Excel.
j. Valid Driver’s license
k. Dependable vehicle for field work.
l. Must be able to pass a federal background check.
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)
a. bachelor’s or master’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology, Geology, Agronomy, or related field or
equivalent experience.
b. Familiarity with conservation programs.
c. Knowledge and experience in natural resource management.
d. Experience writing and managing grant programs
e. Experience with ArcGIS Working Conditions
This job is a regular-part time position at 20 hours per week and involves a combination of office work, field work, and limited traveling. This position involves working and being comfortable outdoors. Some nights and weekends will be required. Travel is primarily within Missaukee County. Expansion of hours dependent upon funding found by Technician.
Wage: $17.00/hour
Benefits: Paid vacation after one year and sick leave after 90 days. Mileage reimbursement.
